What is Nia?

Let's start at the beginning...

What type of dance is Nia?

Nia is a fusion form, drawing on three dance arts: Duncan dance, Jazz dance and Modern (contemporary) dance. It also brings in exercises and concepts from the three healing arts of Yoga, Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais. And these are fused with ideas from the martial art forms of Tai Chi, Aikido and Tae Kwondo.

Who is Nia for?

Nia is for everyone...

How physically fit do you need to be to do Nia?

NIA is suitable for all levels of fitness. Classes are taught with three levels, and if you’re new to exercise you can do the whole class at Level 1, with small movements.  NIA is never about pushing yourself, and if you feel any pain, then make  your movements smaller and more comfortable.

If you keep coming to classes, you will find your fitness and energy levels increase, and you can increase the range and speed of your movements – in your own natural time.

If you have any concerns, please contact me for a chat before booking into a class. I ask all dancers to complete a fitness form before dancing for the first time, and please let me know of any issues that I need to be aware of to support you in dancing safely.

I’m quite un co-ordinated with no sense of rhythm. Could I do Nia?

Absolutely, you can enjoy NIA even if you don’t co-ordinate everything.  And because NIA works over time on building and strengthening new neural connections in the brain, you may find your co-ordination strengthens with regular practice.

My own ability to pick up dance steps and routines has grown massively since starting Nia. And if would like to learn to be more co-ordinated, this is a safe and fun way to do it.  Think of it as any skill, with practice it gets easier and you’ll feel a sense of satisfaction.

Can I do Nia if I have a back injury?

Nia is a low impact form of exercise. However if you have any concerns about your ability to move safely, please speak to your doctor or ancillary health professional.  Nia can help ease chronic pain over time, but if you have an acute injury then please seek medical advice. I’m always happy to have a chat with you about adjusting routines.

Who will be teaching me Nia?

Felicity Dwyer. Let me introduce myself...

Dancing has been my source of joy for over 20 years, and I find a sense of freedom on the dance floor whatever else is going on. After experimenting with different forms of dance and movement, I discovered Nia, and realised that here was a beautiful and complete system of movement that suited my body and my mind.

I love Nia so much that I decided in 2019 to take the intensive training to become a Nia White Belt teacher.  I am excited about sharing this powerful and enjoyable movement practice with students in and around my home town of Alresford in Hampshire.
